Uterine Fibroid Embolization: A Better Alternative to Hysterectomy
Each year 5 million women in America will experience pain symptoms from uterine fibroids. Treatment for painful fibroids that do not respond to hormone therapy has been surgical, either removing individual fibroids (myomectomy) to preserve the uterus in the case of someone who may still wish to have children, or removing the entire uterus (hysterectomy). Hysterectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures in America, yet it requires hospitalization and is not without significant potential complications. A safer and less invasive treatment that can be performed on an outpatient basis is called Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE).
Uterine Fibroid Embolization is performed by SDI's specially trained Interventional Radiologists at St. Joseph's Hospital.
