Overview of Current Topics in Women's Imaging

Breast Cancer
Mammography is now being focused at The Breast Center at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital where we have our top women's imaging subspecialists, but is also performed at St. Joseph's Diagnostic Center and SDI Oldsmar.

Imaging-guided breast biopsies - Minimally-invasive precision targeted stereotactic or ultrasound-guided core biopsies are an alternative to open surgical biopsy for many lesions.  These are performed by SDI radiologists at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital.

Osteoporosis
Now that there are effective medications, diagnosis of this common and significant cause of morbidity is important; this is done with Bone Densitometry (DEXA scan), now available at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital, St. Joseph's Diagnostic Centers, and SDI Diagnostic Imaging at Oldsmar.

If osteoporosis results in painful compression fracture, an effective minimally-invasive treatment option is available called Vertebroplasty.  Our specialists have performed over 2,000 vertebroplasties safely over the past several years and the patients have expressed great satisfaction with the procedure.  This is performed at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Uterine Fibroids
An alternative to hysterectomy is now available for women with painful fibroids. Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is safe and effective and is performed by our specialists at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Pulmonary Embolism in Pregnant Patients
For diagnosis of PE, CT Pulmonary Angiography is best, and fetal radiation dose is less than with V/Q scan at any age of gestation.  This is performed with IV contrast using a helical CT unit.  The study is available at St. Joseph's Hospital and at SDI's South Tampa and Oldsmar locations.

Infertility
Hysterosalpingography is available at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital, SDI South Tampa, and SDI Oldsmar.
