Topics include new imaging guidelines due to the development of new or improved imaging capabilities with the advent of such technology as Helical Multidetector CT (also known as Multislice or Spiral CT).  Minimally invasive imaging-guided targeted treatments are now available such as RF ablation for tumors and there are alternatives to surgery for patients with fibroids, varicose veins, brain aneurysms, and AAA.  Precision imaging-guided biopsies now allow accurate diagnoses, without the need for an open surgical procedure.

Due to insurance company requirements, orders for imaging exams must now specify whether the exam should be performed with IV contrast, without, or both.  We have included an ordering guide to assist you in choosing the right test for your patient's condition.  In addition to our guide to IV contrast indications, we discuss a common medical myth, that of "iodine allergy" and shellfish as a contraindication to use of iodinated contrast.
